Photo Blog Introduction...

I'm going to share with you a picture a day, that summarizes one of the most exciting adventures from that day. It could be something that happened to me, something that I witnessed, or something that keeps me asking more questions about my faith and love in a God that is beautiful and powerful. I am going to share it with each of you, in hopes that you can share the memories and moments with me on this Journey. Inspired by, Hebrews 12:1.

8.27.12-Burma Benefit-UPDATE!

It has been a year of transition, learning, and triumph, and I have loved and absorbed every teachable moment during this time.  About six months ago, I was asked to join David Radcliff on New Community Project's Learning Tour to Burma, Southeast Asia.  Reluctantly, I had said 'no' to this same question at least a dozen times before, coming up with every imaginable excuse.  But this time I had no excuse not to say yes.  I even tried to make one up, and I just couldn't find any excuse to say no.  So I said yes.  Now, with less than six months until we depart, I am contacting you for your support in this endeavor.

There are a few ways that you can start helping.  First and foremost, prayer for God's provision over this trip and his purpose for me during this trip.  Job 9:1-10 tells us how powerful God is and how immense He is, and that there is no surprise for God, everything is perfect in His timing.

"Job continued by saying: "So what's new? I know all this. The question is, 'How can mere mortals get right with God?' If we wanted to bring our case before him, what chance would we have? Not one in a thousand! God's wisdom is so deep, God's power so immense, who could take him on and come out in one piece? He moves mountains before they know what's happened, flips them on their heads on a whim. He gives the earth a good shaking up, rocks it down to its very foundations. He tells the sun, 'Don't shine,' and it doesn't; he pulls the blinds on the stars. All by himself he stretches out the heavens and strides on the waves of the sea. He designed the Big Dipper and Orion, the Pleiades and Alpha Centauri. We'll never comprehend all the great things he does; his miracle-surprises can't be counted." Job 9:1-10, The Message.

God's wisdom is so deep, God's power so immense, who could take him on and come out in one piece? He moves mountains before they know what's happened, flips them on their heads on a whim. He gives the earth a good shaking up, rocks it down to its very foundations.  Job 9:1-10

Secondly, you can support me financially, by attending the Burma Benefit: Spaghetti Fundraiser Lunch on September 30th, 2012 at 12noon, (see photo below).  There is no specified cost, but all donations will go directly towards my trip costs and any financial needs of the trip.

<The cost of the trip is approximately $2,500 and I have about over half of that money left to raise in five months>

What are we going to be doing, you ask?  Great question!  I'm not entirely sure myself, BUT there are big things in store, for sure.  Women's rights are essentially nonexistent in that part of the world.  Women are born and that culture feels as though they are a lost cause and put little, if any, effort into them.  Education is not a priority for these girls, some marry as young as 12, and women are literally degraded-leaving them feeling no self-worth.  If women are given an opportunity for education, which is rare, they are generally asked to quit in elementary school or middle school to go and make a wage, which is next to nothing and could barely support one person for a day; nevertheless, a family for a month.  The days that we find it hard to get up out of bed to go to work or school or the gym, let us remember that these girls, if given the opportunity to go to school walk miles upon miles to recrieve only a basic education.  If given the opportunity to work, work in poor conditions for very little money.  And are rarely given the opportunity for healthcare and often die from easily preventable diseases; basic care that we take for granted.  We will be hiking from village to village to learn of these inequalities, the racism and sexism that exists, and what is being done and what can be done to eliminate these injustices.  Your money will not only support my finances and travel expenses, but a portion of your money will go towards the direct ministries and needs of these local villages.  The purpose of this trip is NOT to go and change these people in Burma; yet, it is to go there and BE CHANGED by them.

I appreciate your continued support in all of my experiences and trips, and I pray that you continue to keep our group in your thoughts and prayers.  God has big plans for us, and has left much of these plans into our hands to carryout by listening closely, trusting wisely, and following a calling.

With love always...

8.23.12-Majestically Grounded

“Wilderness to the people of America is a spiritual necessity, an antidote to the high pressure of modern life; a means of regaining serenity and equilibrium.”  –Sigurd Olson.

Regina and I went on my favorite hike, a place of serenity and complete peace.  The hawks are so close to us, the wind was fierce, and the sun was warm.  Stony Man, the simplest hike known, with the most beautiful reward at the end.  We stopped in the Big Meadows museum and visitor center where we took a journey down the creation of the Shenandoah National Forest.  It was inspiring and awesome to read about the paths that were not yet paved 50 years ago, but now are well paved for people like us to enjoy its beauty.
Stony Man Summit
“The love of wilderness is more than a hunger for what is always beyond our reach; it is also an expression of loyalty to the earth.” –Edward Abbey, Desert Solitude, 1968.

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.”  Rachel Carson, Silent Spring 1956

The power that the Earth has is all encompassing and powerful beyond belief.  From snakes to fire ants, from bears to Hawks, and from day lilies to ferns, it is majestic.  It's strange how I can feel more grounded 30,000 ft. up a cliff than below sea level on paved ground.

Genesis 1:26-28,
God spoke: "Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature So they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, And, yes, Earth itself, and every animal that moves on the face of Earth." God created human beings; he created them godlike, Reflecting God's nature. He created them male and female. God blessed them: "Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge! Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air, for every living thing that moves on the face of Earth.  What an honor to have been given the privilege to take care of and provide for the earth He created.    And how tragic it is that very few areas are well cared for and maintained.

8.22.12-Love never fails you

The pieces to the broken heart, before they were painted.  "A broken heart is never put back together quite the same way."
I led an activity, based on Lectio Divina, that was first recognized from On Earth Peace, an organization through the Church of the Brethren.  Lectio Divina is where continuous prayer of scripture allows a deeper relationship with God to form.  The symbolic representation of a broken heart being put back together, either changed by circumstance or healed by beauty, is how we started.  I find strength in my small group that I wanted to share this experience with them because of it's powerful nature.
The scripture given to me, Psalm 34:4-8, that I used to paint my piece in the background.
Each participant brought their favorite scripture to the activity, one that they pray over and over to bring them comfort or healing in troubled waters.  We each took a piece of the heart and a scripture at random.  A broken heart is never put back together quite the same way, either because it has been hurt and pieces of the heart are left behind somewhere, or because the heart has been changed and molded into a new thing.  These ladies have been part of the "refilling the empty spaces of my heart that have been taken and never returned" process over the past year, as I hope I have been the same for them as well.  After receiving our scripture and picking our piece of the heart,
Scripture that Rachel used to paint her piece, "...so do not fear..."
everyone was encouraged to spend time in prayer with the scripture and to paint what the scripture spoke to them.  No one used their own scripture, but each were connected to each other by the bond that the scripture had to someone before and what it had to someone now.  The activity was very meaningful, and representative of not only the deeper relationship built with Christ, but also with each other.  We had new faces join us, which was great to spread the love of the common bond with new children of God.
The piece that I painted, based on Bekah's favorite scripture, Psalm 34: 4-5
The scriptures used in this activity were:

1 Corinthians 7:17
Psalm 139:1, 3b, 7
Ecclesiastes 3:11
Psalm 34:4-5
Isaiah 40:11-13
Joshua 1:9-10
Psalm 46:10
Isaiah 54:13

And the final artwork, where every piece just fell into place exactly as it was supposed to looks something like this.  Where you are right now is God's place for you.  Live and Obey and Love and Believe right there. -1 Corinthians 7:17
The final product, with everyone's piece painted, that fits together exactly how God purposed it to fit.

8.19.12-What happens in Pittsburgh should really stay there...

8.18.12-Mason Jars full 'o Love!

So we drove to Pittsburgh to go to Nichole's Wedding Shower and Bachelorette Party Festivities.  On the way, we stopped just outside of the final destination in glorious Pittsburgh for lunch.  We first started out in Deutch-land sketch-o-ville Pittsburgh, next to the 'Hallelujah Anyhow Barber Shop'.  True story.  We got back in the car and headed towards 'Angry Johnny's' because we just felt that it would be a better option for us.  On the way we found 'Local' and just decided to eat there instead.  (Little did we know, we were going to there later that night for a different kind of party).  It was right on the street, with open windows, and all you can drink mimosas!

Then we went to the shower and shared an afternoon with family and friends, eating yummy food, and sharing in anticipation for the big day!
There were such cute ideas, all brought to the party by Nichole's cousin, Bethany.  Then we all went to dinner at Azul Bar & Cantina.  Basically we just ate all day, whatever was in front of us...

I think I realized during the shower that I love Sunflowers.  I love them just as much as Tiger Lilies, which is a lot to say because no flower, at least that's how it used to be, is more beautiful.
But Sunflowers have a resilience to them, a towering strength about them to radiates beauty. There's something so beautiful about seeing a field of stalks of Sunflowers, all taking a beating from the fierce sun, but standing strong even without water or shade.  Their brightness radiates from a distance.  It's something to be desired, even if they are just a flower.

These ladies are a good time.  We have some pretty wild stories to place in our memory books from this weekend.  From pictures with 10 random guys, push-ups, putting on makeup on random men in a bar, dancing with sketch-dude, rad girl fights, cars that make funny noises, GPS machines that take us the most obscene routes possible, car sickness, and deadines, not to mention bonding over a common destinations and desires.  I love 'em something fierce!

8.16.12-This is your time

This was her time
This was her dance
She lived every moment
Left nothing to chance
She swam in the sea
Drank of the deep
Embraced the mystery
Of all she could be
This was her time
Lyrics to Michael W. Smith's, "This is your Time"

I do what I love.  I screw up.  I enjoy friendships and long conversations.  I enjoy really hot coffee, but then wait forever to take the first sip.  I love taking pictures.  I am a horrible texter.  I hate getting up early in the morning.  I have to be at work at 0645.  I like Banana flavored things.  I hate Bananas.  I'm really good at the game Apples to Apples.  I have loved.  I have been loved.  I'm confident and a leader.  I have moments of doubt and uncertainty.  I love to travel.  I am outspoken, but have a hard time articulating certain feelings.  I love the smell of campfires.   I am passionate about my profession.  I enjoy meeting new people.  I am a daughter.  I am a sister.  I am an aunt.  I am a mentor and a teacher.  I am a friend.  I love to Zumba.
Above all else, I am a child of God just living each moment, leaving nothing to chance.

8.15.12-Plan B

The most successful people are the ones that are good at Plan B.  I'm all over Plan B.  So enormously grateful for the Women in Christ in my small group.  They are courageous and strong, and really living out God's life for them, even when things just plain suck---they continue headstrong without hesitation.  They are great people to surround myself with and to continue to grow with.

8.14.12-To know the heart of God

Act with patience.  Do nothing that would discourage others from turning to Christ, but instead let the Holy Spirit use you to inspire others to turn to Christ.  if your heart is filled with love, patience will be one of your defining qualities and a reason why others draw nearer to you.  Patience leaves time for anger to fade away.  Act with patience.

To know the heart of God is to love.  To love in a way that takes you away from your comfort zone, that tears you away from the things that make you comfortable, and to places you in situations, like the edge of a cliff, where you have two choices.  You either jump and know that He will catch you or you jump and you learn how to fly.  To love someone so fierce that you risk humiliation, To love someone so fierce, that it brings pain to you to watch it disappear or to watch it suffer, is to know the heart of God.

8.13.12-Share Your Blessings

Share your blessings.  The Lord gave himself for you; what shall you give for him?  All that you have is not your own but was provided to you by God.  Make the needs of others your own and help them, giving freely and cheerfully in order to be blessed.  Share what he has given you, and in the process, please and honor him who has made you rich in heaven.  Giving for God's purposes are indeed sacrifices that please him.  Share your blessings.

Having met the woman that brought me these flowers has been one of the blessings that I have been given that I must share.  Her heart is human; yet true.  Soft; yet confident.  She has wisdom to share, and not necessarily in words, but in actions--the way it is supposed to be.  Her life is a blessing to me, and I'm glad to be able to share her heart with so many blessed children.

8.8.12-Naptime....

Like Joey and Ross on Friends, but Regina and Heather in real life. She came to take care of me after my surgery...

8.7.12-Aunt Hebs and Nephew Matias

Aunt Hebs and Nephew Matias had a fun time during my surgery/recovery.  This kid is freaking awesome and he even jams to Mumford & Sons and Of Monsters & Men.

8.2.12-It just gets harder...

The Heart Shaped Tomato we found in Johnny's garden
After a goodbye lunch with Josh, we went to Johnny's and made homemade salsa!  Regina's recipe was so yummy.  It was only appropriate that I found a heart shaped tomato during our cooking endeavors.  I think I love this picture, mostly because this girl has stolen my heart!  I prayed last year that when I started my new job, that God would send me someone at work to walk beside me during this tough transition and be my source of earthly strength and courage.  Needless to say, Regina was also praying for the same thing from God, and so God brought us together.  We have shared some pretty remarkable moments over the past year, at work and also away from work.  Some call her my "work wife", some call her my napping buddy, but I call us a beautiful friendship.
Homemade Salsa
The afternoon was perfect, not only because we shared time together cooking, but because we also shared an afternoon with Josh before he began his new adventure in Boston.  We jammed to some pretty awesome music and had some good "little talks".  I've mentioned before that this summer was hard because I've had to say goodbye to some pretty amazing people that I've met.  I know it's silly to be sad when people leave your life for a little bit of time, because in the end it's a God thing.  God has things in store for each of us; He has to take a few things out to make more room for new things.  But it is still hard.  With each person that has moved on to new adventures this summer, it has gotten harder.  This one was hard enough, but the next one will clearly be the hardest.  One of my biggest sources of earthly strength is potentially moving on to another adventure, only for three months--but a lot can happen in three months!  My heart hurts just thinking about it...

Peeled Tomatoes-always a first

7.30.12-Brinner

Brinner with an awesome Family

A family in harmony will prosper in everything.  -Chinese Proverb

I had wanted to do a Brinner for a long time, so we decided after studying all day for our ACLS course that we would hold a Brinner at Johnny's house.  We made Bacon, Eggs, and Hashbrowns, and had fruit and Mimosas!  I think it's times like these, where memories are made and formed that you become closest to the people that God sends to you.  I just can't stress how awesome God is, because He sends people to you for exactly the right reasons at exactly the right time...

7.21-29.12-When the Legends Die, the Dreams End. When the Dreams end, there is no more....

Ebony and myself, a girl I met at the Little Wound Feeding Program at Little Wound High School
Let me share with you some of the beauty found in South Dakota and some of the pain that also follows it.  Ebony, a girl that I met at the Summer Feeding Program in Kyle, South Dakota.  She's a precious child of God, that has seen more of her share of hurt and pain than any of us can fathom.  While I was visiting her, we at Breakfast and Lunch together for the entire week and she brought such innocence to our conversations.  One of the days, she didn't come to Breakfast, so I asked her friend, Melena, where she was.  It was very hush hush, and I obviously was concerned.  I learned later that her Grandmother had scolded her and yelled at her.  Exchanges of words happened, and I wouldn't be surprised if other physical actions weren't exchanged.  I served as a listening ear to her the next time I saw her the following day.  The pain and warfare in this land is horrific. The psychology of poverty, the governmental restrictions and regulations prohibit any of these children from escaping a cycle of alcoholism, drugs, and abuse.  One of the girls in our High School group ate with her during an advisor meeting I had to attend.  Ebony asked Alexis if she had a best friend.  Then Alexis asked Ebony if she had a best friend and without hesitation she pointed to me across the room.
Badlands National Park, Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota
Even though the stories these people share are sad and truly depressing, their land is beautiful, and their history is even more beautiful.  Their desire to preserve what has always been theirs, and their desire to continue the tradition of storytelling in the Lakota Sioux Tribe.  They are open to outsiders and "whites" to come in an partake in ceremonies such as Sweat Lodges, Sun Dances, and other spiritual opportunities to continue the tradition.

Indian Joe at Mount Rushmore, the roots run deep on this photo
This might be one of my most frustrating stories from all of my trips to South Dakota.  The beautiful land you see above is often stolen by the American Government, without reason and without consideration of consequences.  In 1941 Mount Rushmore was completed, a carving of four-white-American Presidents into stolen Black Hills Land from the Ogala Lakota Sioux Tribe from the Pine Ridge Reservation.   Now millions of people are attracted to this monument, creating quite a business of tourism, that benefits the National Park Services-which is a great organization-but not one Indian sees this money, not one reservation or tribe sees any benefits to this attraction built on their stolen land.  Indian Joe, pictured above, was very close to our group this week and toured with us, providing a Lakota Sioux perspective on everything.  Although he is proud of the Black Hills where these monuments are located, he feels betrayal and frustration towards the American Government for the hate and crime associated with this monument.  I can't help but feel frustration and betrayal while looking in his eyes also.

They made us many promises, more than I can remember, but they never kept but one; they promised to take our land, and they took it.  -Red Cloud

8.3.12-A Strong Hand to Hold

With life comes change.
With changes comes fear, insecurity, sorrow, stress.  So what do I do?  Hibernate?  Take no risks for fear of failing?  Give no love for fear of losing?

Absolutely not.  These feelings have culminated over the past several weeks and I know that without risks, comes no experience, without love comes no passion, without timidity comes no growth.  Today officially ends my summer-a summer filled with love, compassion, desire, adventure, innocence, and above all else, blessings filled and blessings given.  I can't be ashamed of the desire found and the desire carried out, for it is through that desire that we find ourself and find our purpose in life.  One year ago today, I prayed that I would be sent 'people', people that would show me love, show me life, and show me whatever it was that I needed to see.  Never in my wildest dreams would that prayer be fulfilled ten-fold.  Even though this season, a fantastic one, has passed, I still keep my bearings set on the North Star in the universe, knowing full-well that it is Him that still continues to provide the blessings that I reap.  Who's coming into my life next?  What adventure is before me?  Time will be the storyteller of those questions.....

Someone You'd Admire-Fleet Foxes
After all is said and done I feel the same
All that I hoped would change within me stayed
Like a huddled moon-lit exile on the shore
Warming his hands, a thousand years ago

I walk with others in the yearning to get out
Claw at my skin and gnash their teeth and shout
One of them wants only to be someone you'd admire
One would as soon just throw you on the fire

After all is said and after all is done
God only knows which of them I'll become
